The Book Drop Box
The Book Drop Box is there for people to return books and to leave donations.
(We ask people to contact us for larger donations so that we can make sure we have room).
The idea was mainly during the pandemic, to be able to sanitise and quarantine donated books before they went in the library.
It works so well we are keeping the Book Drop Box as a permanent feature.

The Original Book Drop Box
The Book Drop Box was originally a 23L food caddy with lid from Amazon It was weighted down with builder's sand in a plastic bag (didn't need much) and placed just to the right of the library. It did a great job at keeping the water out. (The similar version with a moveable locking black handle doesn't keep rain out). It was a green caddy, with ivy patterned D-C-Fix on the base. |
The NEW Book Drop Box
The new Book Drop Box is a 90L Toomey Storage Box from Argos. At the time of writing, it was £28 but is often reduced and was £15 at the time of purchase. The base is flimsy so needs to stand on something firm (a paving flag in this case). It's weighted down inside with a smaller paving flag. There is a hole for a padlock on the lid by the handle which we were going to use to make a catch to stop the flimsy lid from blowing open in the wind (it's in a windy spot). Instead, we glued 6 sandpaper blocks which fit perfectly into the lid and covered them with a black plastic wallet, which we attach notices to - how to use the library, competitions etc. The blocks add just weight to keep the lid closed and it hasn't blown open yet. So far, a perfect solution! Inside is a supermarket shopping bag. If there are a lot of donations in one day it's easy to take the bag out and replace it with another. |
