We are expanding our little group in January 2024 and taking on new members.
We read one book a month and meet at the Marsh Harrier once a month to discuss the book we've read and to rate it out of 5. We take it in turns to suggest a choice of 3 books and the group vote for which one they'd like to read. The book with the most votes is the one we read. All votes are done anonymously using your smartphone, so no peer pressure! Find out more, and join the waiting list
Books that divide opinion make for a great Book Club discussion. In this case, there wasn't too much to discuss with it being a short book! As we discussed it over our Book Club Christmas Meal with lashings of prosecco, it probably didn't matter too much and we had a fun evening.
We've had a few applications to join the waiting list for Book Club lately. They've all been replied to so you so should have had an email but if not please feel free to chase.
If you haven't applied but would like to there is more information here. Join Book Club We meet once a month on a Monday evening at the Marsh Harrier. The format is as follows: In turn, we discuss the book we've just read, starting with the person who chose it and then we have a group discussion about it. We take it in turns to pick a question at random about the book, answer it and discuss. Using our smartphones, we rate the book out of 5. We then look at covers of the 3 proposed books for next time and read the blurb. Using our smartphones, we vote for the book we'd like to read. The book we read next is the one with the most votes. We decide on a date for the next book club. Book club ends and we either leave or stay for a chat and a catch-up.
Once again, the Children's Summer Reading Challenge was very popular. Lots of reading was done during the summer holidays, with a movie theme this year.
Our lucky winner Hetty won a £10 Vue Cinema voucher. Runners-up Ada & Grace both won movie themed goodies to enjoy. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you for entering. (Remember, the book is always better!) Members take it in turns to choose 3 books and then we vote anonymously for the one we'd like to read. The book with the most votes is the one we read.
It was my turn this month so I decided to pick three very different books. One of the things we like most about book club is reading books we wouldn't normally choose. I would usually read the 3rd option but not the first two. The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods was the book with the most votes that was chosen to read. The story follows three main characters, Opaline, Martha & Henry - strangers whose stories come together in an unusual way. It blends historical and contemporary settings with a touch of magic and a love of books. While I would never have chosen to read it I absolutely loved it! In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I read it, re-read parts and I also listened to it on Audible while I was on holiday. There were one or two loopholes in the story but they just left me curious. Book Club scored it 4/5 and it's currently rated 4.5/5 on Amazon. "The thing about books,' she said, 'is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of" |
